Preacher and Gravedigger

That night the ground was soggy

Like freshly mixed cement

Two men stood by an open grave

One tall and one bent

The fog around them lifted

By the light the lantern lent

The bent man was a preacher

The holiest man in town

He was praying for the girl

Who was laying in the ground

His folded hands were bloody

And he didn't make a sound

His old friend the gravedigger

Was standing right behind

He was humming a little tune

Like he didn't seem to mind

Being wakened after midnight

To treat his friend so kind

"Thank you" said the preacher

As he finished up his prayer

"And for you to keep this quiet

I'll double your normal fare"

The gravedigger smiled darkly

And breathed in the cold night air

The gravedigger said "Don't worry

We'll take care of this, you'll see

I'll bury all your problems

And for my regular fee

I dig a hole, I fill a hole

It's all the same to me"

The preacher nodded his head at that

And then began to sob

Relieved that his old friend

Only cared about his job

Now he could go and find another

Innocent life to rob

The gravedigger, he kept humming

and lifted his shovel high

He said "This time's a little different

Let me tell you why

You'll be with her in that grave tonight

Before we say goodbye"

The gravedigger brought the shovel

Down on the preacher's head

The skull, it split wide open

And the grave it filled with red

As he kicked the preacher into the hole

Here's what the gravedigger said

You should be more careful

who you pick for your twisted aims

The woman you are lying on

Happens to have my last name

I should have stopped you sooner

And for that I take the blame

I dig a hole, I fill a hole

To end your wicked game
